New York photographer Nikki S Lee pushes the boundaries of
identity and place, and looks into who we are and how others see us. The
photographs she takes act as ‘snapshot’ self portraits, placing herself with
the frame. Lee transforms into the documented subject and constructs her own
context. She befriends certain social groups for example skateboarders and
senior citizens to add herself to a stereotype, looking in and out of the
community.
“We become forensic detectives looking for narrative clues
to the story that Lee is withholding from us.” (Information from “Stretching
Identity to Fit: The Many Faces of Nikki S Lee” by Dayna McLeod).
(Discussing Image from Punk Project)
“The image captures a non moment- a snapshot that might trigger a
time and place in personal memory for the participants or their circle of
friends, but for those outside of this circle, the picture is a snapshot of
punk itself.” (Information from “Stretching Identity to Fit: The Many
Faces of Nikki S Lee” by Dayna McLeod).
